OPNsense is an open source, FreeBSD-based [[id:b9047be5-edca-4eca-8bac-c45e03373942][Firewall]] and [[id:d2ff2e45-e1de-4cca-9b59-dfc3ee6afa6f][routing]] software developed by Deciso, a company in the Netherlands that makes [[id:01ec5ed6-a234-4063-994b-174f704bb28a][hardware]] and sells support packages for OPNsense. It is a fork of pfSense, which in turn was forked from m0n0wall built on FreeBSD. It was launched in January 2015. When m0n0wall closed down in February 2015 its creator, Manuel Kasper, referred its developer community to OPNsense.

OPNsense has a web-based interface and can be used on the x86-64 platform. Along with acting as a firewall, it has [[id:20efb455-5575-4b8b-857f-7c337bee644c][traffic]] shaping, [[id:96c1f3b2-5f11-4cbc-8ed9-71a165026e29][load]] balancing, and virtual private network ([[id:1af47b07-4205-46ac-837a-ee078067328a][vpn]]) capabilities, and others can be added via plugins. OPNsense offers next-generation firewall capabilities utilizing Zenarmor, a NGFW plugin developed by OPNsense partner Sunny Valley Networks.
