In [[id:5f1df0e1-384f-4685-ae1e-fec2431b04e5][emacs]]-speak, a window a [[id:75a2a403-34a2-4e4c-9fb0-10260ef97eab][frame]] pane, that is, a subframe. What is usually called a “window” outside of Emacs is called a frame in Emacs. A window displays the contents of a single buffer. A buffer need not be displayed in a window, however.
